Course Objective

The goal of this activity is to present expert insight on the burden of type 2 diabetes, particularly the burden of macrovascular complications, and the importance of appropriate therapy, that is, therapy that not only manages glycemia but also takes into account the need to manage concomitant diseases and risk factors. Expert insight is also provided on new classes of antidiabetic therapies, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will have:

  1. A greater comprehension of the importance of managing the whole patient with type 2 diabetes, taking into clinical consideration the need to control and manage concomitant risk factors
  2. A greater appreciation of the need for new treatment paradigms for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, for example, the rationale for initial combination therapy
  3. A greater understanding of the place of the new "incretin-based" therapies in the management of type 2 diabetes
